what in tap water will cause the sterling silver to "stain" to the color gold?
bath wearing a sterling silver chain, and afterward I saw it turned into gold / copper appearance. I know the water here is from wells on the site and reported to have a high sulfur content, but can not think of anything this.
Sulphur will do it, by forming a silver sulphide. That is the main component in the damage layers on most silver items. To clean it, fill basin with warm water, add washing soda and some screwed-up ball of tinfoil and a chain. Leave to soak for several minutes and rinse with clean water.
